Melendez & UFC having contract dispute

Gilbert Melendez was a better judges decision away from being the UFC lightweight champion, but now finds himself in a position where he might be looking to fight elsewhere.

UFC President Dana White spoke with Ariel Helwani of UFC Tonight and was quite poignant in his assessment of how the contract negotiation was going.

“It’s not looking good. I spoke to UFC President Dana White yesterday. He said, ‘I’m done with Gilbert. I like Gilbert very much, but I don’t like his manager.’ He has the same manager as GSP. Dana said: ‘Being GSP’s best friend doesn’t make you a good manager.’ Dana said if Gilbert wants to fight in the UFC, he should call Lorenzo quickly and he also should start looking elsewhere.”

If a fighter like Melendez is not a "draw", that is a failure on the part of the promoter, not Gilbert. He is one of the most exciting fighters they have, and should be built up to the casual fan base.Anyone can be made into a draw for a certain period of time or event if they are marketed correctly. After the marketing, it is up to the fighter to live up to the hype or excitement. Maybe that will not work for a lot of folks on this forum, but the majority of UFC fans will believe whatever the UFC sells them. This is a failure on the UFC. Dana get a lot of credit for bringing MMA to a somewhat mainstream level.I don't feel Dana is much of a talent at all. MMA in itself is inherently interesting and primally most people will take some interest in it. I am sure he has and does a lot behind the scenes to bring the sport to a larger audience, but his public performances could be argued to have held MMA back as much as is backstage performance has helped.

I wonder where is it determined if a fighter is a draw or not. How do you know?

When did this all become about "draws."What happened to being the superbowl of MMA and having the best fighters in the world. He's obviously some kind of draw if Bellator is willing to pay him what he wants.

WSOF was founded by Fetittta's good pal, Sig Rogich. They will never be a competitor of the UFC's. If anything, they are merely trying to fuck with the UFC's rival competitors like Bellator.

I would love to know what Dana would be doing if he wasn't friends with the Fertittas. He is a dumb motherfucker
