Jessica Eye's reported ng/ML level was insignificant

Last week it was learned that UFC women's bantamweight fighter Jessica Eye had failed a drug screen administered by the Texas athletic commission for UFC 166 in October. Eye had been fined $1,875, her split decision win over Sarah Kaufman was turned to a No Contest, and she is subject to an administrative suspension that ensures she pays the fine, does not test positive again, etc.

Eye's suspension is probationary, and does not prohibit her from fighting Alexis Davis on the undercard of UFC 170 on Feb. 22.

At a recent media event, UFC president Dana White related information about the test.

According to Dana, Jessica Eye had 16 ng/ML marijuana metabolites. Texas threshold is 15. Most states are 50. Nevada is 150 ng/ML.

Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs have a cutoff of 50 ng/ML. World Anti-Doping Agency has a threshold of 150 ng/ML. Eye was at 11% of the level that would have been okay for the Olympics. No fighter should compete high, or for that matter drunk, but penalizing someone in this day and age for 16 ng/ML is an embarrassment to the sport.

Multiple studies have shown that 16 ng/ML is consistent with passive smoking:
•The first study was conducted by Perez-Reyes and co-workers in 1983. (1-3) The study consisted of three different experiments; one conducted in an automobile, and two in a small room. Of the specimens collected for analysis, two specimens were found positive for THC metabolites by the EMIT screening test at a cutoff level of 20 ng/ml.
•Morland et al. (5) performed a study in which subjects in a car smoked marijuana... The subjects passively exposed to marijuana smoke did show occasional urine specimens that were positive at concentrations ranging from 14 to 30 ng/ml of total THC metabolites.

Eye's father Randy, 55, is undergoing chemotherapy for stage IV glioblastoma multiforme, the same form of brain cancer that Ted Kennedy succumbed to.

As many cancer patients use marijuana to cope with the ill effects of chemotherapy, this could be one possible source of the failed test.

Eye has set up a GoFundMe site to defray her father’s medical costs and aid in his fight.

it wouldn't be in either case. if she had 15.0000001 and she failed then it i could see it. but she had 16. really hard to say that something that is almost 7% of the total is infinitesimal

I think Chris meant to use it as an adjective not a noun, in which case the usage was correct, but he ran out space. And had to shrink the spelling to size. I will not yell at him for this one.

first of all you spelled infinitesimal wrong. secondly that word means immeasurably or incalculably minute, which in this case, it was measurable. it was small, but stop trying to use big words ug blog.

Damn. Whatever my thoughts on the Kaufman fight, that's one of the worst raw deals I've heard for awhile if true.
