The most anticipated rematch in UFC history?

SI's Jeff Wagenheim writes beautifully about Sunday's Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua rematch, and what it means, and what it doesn't. Wagenheim takes issue with the UFC's marketing of the fight as "The most anticipated rematch in UFC history."

Rua came into the first fight with KOs over three former UFC champions - Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, and Lytoto Machida. Hendo was coming of a KO of Fedor F@$%in' Emelianenko.

Now Hendo has not won a fight since, and after this, he will not longer be issued a Therapeutic Use Exemption for Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Shogun has gone 2-2 since, with losses to Sonnen and Gustafsson. The wins were over Brandon Vera and James Te-Huna.

However...

Relevancy isn't everything in this game. Sometimes a fight is just a fight. It appears out of nothingness and takes us nowhere, but in the here and now it's sublime. That's the mindset that best fits this bout. If we attach to it all of the expectations built up from watching Henderson and Rua do battle back in 2011 -- that is, if we treat it like "the most anticipated rematch in UFC history" -- we're destined for disappointment. But if we just sit back and watch, with no rewriting of a glorious past and no expectation for a crowning future, we might just end up with another exhilarating viewing experience.

Brock-Murr destroyed the ppv record. It's not even close. The only reasonable answers would be: Chuck-Randy/Rampage/Tito or Silva-Sonnen

Well Page fight againts Griffin wasn't the most spectacular. But you're totally right Page was on good 6-1 in last 7 fights. Won againts prime Henderson & Liddell. Those were exciting times!

People who expected Wand to KO Rampage a third time weren't watching MMA at the time. It was clear by the third fight that the two were on opposite trajectories, IMO.

So true, both of them were huge! I'm from the Europe (Finland) and to me and my mates Wand/page 3 was and prolly still is the biggest rematch. Mostly coz page got KO'd so badly twice and I think lot peeps expected the same again. I think from recent re-matches Frankie vs. Gray was highly anticipated.

I was at that fight and met a bunch of fighters, even ones that weren't fighting like Rampage, Burkman, Stevenson, AA, Monson, Whitehead, and the nicest one of all, Tito. Got great pics The Mandalay was on fire. It was right after the colloasal success of TUF ! and there was all kinds of new fans and hype. The arena was electric and crazy-Frank Mir was making his comeback fight, all kinds of shit going on. I have on of the pics with me and Whitehead on my profile page from that event. Randy retired in the cage that night- I was a huge Couture fan and was devastated and everybody was shocked. Great parties after-good timesx

Surprised no one has mentioned Chuck/Randy. Coming out of TUF1, it was huge. It was their third fight but the most anticipated for me was Wand/Page.Also Chuck/Page.

Ha ha, no chance.Maybe the most heated (outside Tito/Shamrock) but if nothing else what made this less anticipated was we all knew the result.I'd vote GSP/Penn. They were both at the top of their game and the first match had controversy. It didn't get the same UFC hype machine as Rousey/Tate and some others as it was a few years back but it didn't need it.
