White: Shields was 'never going to be the guy'

Yesterday the UFC announced that Jake Shields had been released from his contract, despite being unbeaten in four consecutive fights before losing to Hector Lombard.

Today UFC President Dana White commented on the release:

White told Yahoo Sports on Monday that Shields was due to make $120,000 in his next fight.

"We look at everything," White said. "Everything. Money has something to do with it. I'd be lying if I said it didn't. But that wasn't the only reason or the main reason. It was a part of the piece of the puzzle as we were doing our evaluation of him."

"Mixed martial arts is a young man's game," White said. "I like Jake Shields a lot. But let's be honest here: Where was he going in this [welterweight] division of animals we have? He's on the downswing, and he's never going to be the guy. His stand-up never improved. He hasn't really shown anything in his last couple of fights to make you go, 'Holy [expletive].' Right now, at this point, he's just another guy.

"All of the people who had been [expletive] and moaning to me about Jon Fitch when he was fighting for us and were complaining that he was so boring, they all got outraged when we cut him. And it's like the same thing now with Jake. Well, the media didn't even think he was good enough to be in the Top 10."

Jake is out because he's on the bad side of 35 and is 4-3(1) in the UFC and 3 of those wins were by split descions and for a dominant wrestler he only has 1 of his 37 takedown attempts money isn't even the issue

no, they never paid him too much, he was making what a high level professional athlete in the premiere mma organization of the entire world should be making.

The main reason shields is out is because they pay him to much, no body ever sees jake shields in a card and says hell yeah let's see jake shields it just doesn't happen! He has impressive names on his record but his ufc wins were less than impressive he layed on top of someone not doing damage why would anyone want him fighting? I'm sure if he accepted less pay per fight he would still be in ufc ! Let him go to wsof and fight those blokes it will be better for everyone

Glad I could be of service. Now you can afford to buy those PPV's full of guys who lost in the TUF house, AND pay for Fightpass so you can watch the pre-lims full of nobodies you used to watch for free on the PPV you have already paid for!

Now you are just making it clear that you are shilling. At least when you make valid points we can have a discussion.Makes no mistake, the UFC pushed through its own 'unified rules' and would have no problem at all pushing through some changes to enforce more action.Who is going to stop them? The NSAC? Some other commission in one state?as for your basketball reference, again you show your lack of knowledge. The NBA players have a players association and there's no fucking way that any of them would be getting dropped over not being exciting enough, they have contract guarantees which is why if a team can't or doesn't want to pay the salary they need to trade player to someone who'll take it, or waive them and pay them out. There's none of this put them on the shelf or get rid of the bush league shit.

dana makes a good point, where exactly is shields going to go in a division with "animals" like robbie lawler, carlos condit, martin kampmann, demian maia, and tyron woodley?he is clearly just not able to compete with guys like that who make up the top of the WW division.
