White: Kennedy dominant, fight not crowd pleasing

Wednesday night, Tim Kennedy beat Michael Bisping four rounds to one in the eyes of two judges. The third judge gave every round to Kennedy. And the pre fight odds had favored Bisping.

UFC president Dana White reflected on the fight at the post-fight press conference.

"Kennedy did exactly what he said," said White, as transcribed by MMAMania. "Bisping wouldn't throw any punches because he didn't want to get taken down again. He didn't realize how dominant he was gonna be on the ground.

"It was a classic example of what happens when a guy gets taken down and has great jiu-jitsu like that. It's gonna clam a guy up and he's gonna get gun shy and not throw punches. It wasn't a crowd-pleaser, not a fight where people at home are going 'woo hoo, this is awesome,' but the guy put on a pretty dominant performance. (Bisping) got dominated."

A slightly different perspective was offered by SB Nation's Luke Thomas.

I'm reading some people thought Bisping vs. Kennedy was boring. It's a confederacy of dunces out there, indeed.

How did you feel about the fight? Masterful display of wrestling dominance, or I wish they had done the punches more?

Title should be. "Kennedy dominant, fight not appealing to casuals". I was amazed at how often Kennedy took down Bisping.

No. Bisping had great defense on the ground; Kennedy struck when he could but you're ridiculous if you expect him to haul off for the K.O. and lose position. I thought both fighters had a good technical battle, way more action than a lay'n'pray match. Just bleed guys can hit the WWE

Jake Shields thinks there's something shady going on. Bisping's never gonna be the guy.

Are you aware of how hard it is to pass a good guard? You don't just switch to a different position, there's so much more to it. You make it sound like guard passing is super easy, like Tim was in Bisping's guard and just thought "hey I've been in this position for awhile, lets go to side control so I don't get stood up."  You can't just do that.... It takes so much more work.  Kennedy's goal was to continually work to improve his position, get to a dominant spot and then go for the sub. Position before submission. If you just go for a sub all of a sudden without the proper control, you're going to lose what you've accomplished or expose yourself to your opponent's attacks from bottom, and as I mentioned before, it's a pain in the ass to get that control in the first place. To say continually advancing position (yes he was advancing, Tim got to half guard, side control multiple times, mount twice and he had Bisping's back at least once) is lay and pray is just comical.

I thought it was a great fight. I had a boner the entire time. The way Kennedy made Michael his power bottom for 25 minutes was fantastic. Did you see the way Michael was looking at Tim?

AgreedHaving mount does not mean you are free to do as you please until the bell sounds

what you call lay n pray was called superior grappling 15 years ago. i never thought i'd see they day when guard passing, side control, a dominant mount is considered lay and pray. my my my how the fans of the sport have changed over the years.
