When Rousimar Palhares dropped out of a planned fight vs. Jon Fitch at World Series of Fighting in July, the organization was able to dip into a remarkably deep pool at welterweight. Fitch will instead fight Jake Shields.
MMAJunkie confirmed the news with WSoF President Ray Sefo.
Fitch was unexpectedly released by the UFC after losing to Demian Maia over a year ago. He then unexpectedly lost his first fight in the WSoF, vs. JoshBurkman, and won his second, via split decision, vs. Marcelo Alfaya.
Shield was completely unexpectedly cut by the UFC after losing just one fight, that had followed a four-fight win streak (although one win was changed to NC).
The July WSoF card will be headlined by Nick Newell challenging lightweight champion Justin Gaethje.
