Rampage fined 10k 'worst behavior I've seen in professional sports'

There were questions as to whether or not the heat between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal was manufactured or real. Whatever the case, Rampage was fined a flat fee of $10,000 by the Mississippi Athletic Commission chairman Jon Lewis. And when Lewis informed Jackson about the fine, the fighter got so heated he was nearly pulled from the card entirely.

In an interview with MMAFighting, Lewis called Jackson an "out of control individual to the nth degree."

"He got very irate and at this point was f-bombing me pretty bad."

Lewis said the cursing was so bad that removing Jackson from the card was contemplated. Lewis spoke with Bjorn Rebney and ultimately did not exercise that extreme option.

Further, Rampage later apologized.

"Rampage was very apologetic," said Lewis. "He said he deserved the fine and he was assessed one for it."

Lewis expanded on the incident in an interview with Steven Marrocco for MMAJunkie.

“His behavior was the worst I’ve ever seen in professional sports,” said Lewis. “Hitting him for [$10,000] is light, I will say.”

“His reaction to me was, ‘f–- you, motherf–-er, fine me. I said, ‘You’re getting it.’ And it kept elevating back and forth … and it went to the point where I thought, geez, he’s going to take a swing at me.”

“He’d be pulled out of any other professional sport. I’m the head commissioner. I didn’t want this to happen to me. You can take a football player out of a game and you don’t hurt the team that much, per se. There’s a replacement.”

“This whole thing was set up around this fight, and I’m not going to punish Bellator for that."

“Quinton is going to have to learn to cool it,. Will he ever do it? I don’t know.”

Jackson ended up winning a controversial three round decision over Lawal, and now seeking a rematch, rather than a title shot with sometime teammate Emanuel Newton.

“Emanuel and I both share the same coach, the great Antonio McKee," said Rampage at the post fight press conference. "That guy is the secret to my success in addition to my coaches at the Wolfslair. But the fact of it is, Emanuel and I, we both share Antonio McKee. We train together sometimes.

“My other coaches live in England; my team is in England. So, after fights and stuff, I take a week off and then I go up to Antonio McKee's gym and I train with him, with the same sparring partners that Newton trains with, and we train together. So I don't know how that's gonna work.

“I don't know what's gonna happen to our gym. We're kind of like a family. People don't understand that when you train with somebody, you’re closer than brothers sometimes. So I don't know what's gonna happen.”

Is the commissioner that rampage mouthed off to the same jon Lewis that fought in the UFC a while back? His bio on the MS athletic commission site says that he previously competed in mma.

Rampage was doing his job. Bellator was selling a big grudge match with the Rampage Jackson. This is the least they would expect. Bellator would be smart to reimburse Rampage.

What makes it worse is that it was just play acting to sell a fight. Just shows you can't give the commissions any pretense to steal your money.

Football players push and shove before games and don't get thrown out or even fined. Hate when people give examples that aren't true.

I don't understand fighters being fined for just a push. If he sucker punched him well I see the fine and fight being called off. But a push. Just lame rules.
