Iole: Sonnen's excuse is lame

Yesterday after it was announced that Chael Sonnen failed his random drug test, Sonnen and White appeared on UFC Tonight the situation. Sonnen claimed that the drugs he tested positive for were to help him wean off testosterone replacement therapy and help his fertility. Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole isn't buying it though:

Sonnen may try to argue that he took the drugs prior to being licensed, and that may be. But there is no gray area, as Sonnen said there is, in the rules. It is the burden of the licensed athlete to provide a clean test whenever tested by the commission, whether or not there is a fight.

Sonnen, though, was licensed AND was tested on May 23 shortly after his news conference at the MGM Grand Garden to announce the main card of UFC 175.

The rest of his comments were nothing more than red herrings that were used in an attempt to obfuscate the real issue.

Sonnen said he was taking the drugs as part of a course to wean himself off of Testosterone Replacement Therapy, which the Nevada commission banned on Feb. 27. Sonnen had a Therapeutic Use Exemption to use TRT until the Feb. 27 ban. He also said because he suffers from hypogonadism, he is infertile and needed the drugs to help he and his wife conceive.

It's entirely understandable why Sonnen would want to be able to father a child with his wife. But if he planned to do that given his medical situation, he should have held off on applying for the license until qualified medical personnel told him he was clear.

He did not wait and made the laughable excuse that there was no way to find out the rules. Both Nevada's rules and WADA's rules are easily accessible online; further, the commission has repeatedly told athletes to call if they ever have any doubt whether a substance they want to take is legal according to its rules.

I would assume that is correct. We may hear more from the Belfort situation, and as crazy as it's been, I won't be surprised if more cases come to light. So I'm not defending Sonnen, but it's clear that the very same AC that allowed TRT hasn't provided a path for those who now must go off TRT. It is highly unlikely that any former TRT user has stopped cold-turkey if one is to go by medical conclusions.

Henderson didn't piss hot and he came off of it right?  Hallman, Duffee, Marquardt etc all came off of it I think.

Catch 22. It's basically forcing retirement for all previous TRT users.

Guys when are some of you going to come out of denial on Chael. he's no dummy but he does stupid things sometimes. the stuff he got popped for is definitely for coming off TRT/steroids. When you take TRT your body shuts down it's ability to produce testosterone naturally. The anti estrogens jump start your body and wakes it up and basically says "ok body let's start making testosterone naturally again." The drugs make things a smooth transition. With that said… Chael is a millionaire. He has the resources to make sure his I's are dotted and his T's are crossed. He probably didn't think they would random test him so soon after he got licensed. He may have ben good to go in a week.Anyone that has a little knowledge about TRT knows you have to bridge off of the stuff. The fact that no one looked into this and checked with the Commission is mind boggling. It's unorganized and reckless.sometimes I think Chael has a masochist inside him… he used to melt down mentally earlier in his career and give away wins, he gets into legal trouble with his side job, he gets popped a couple times in the UFC for PED's… And Dana would like to see Chael run the show? Chael would be great in a few areas but a train wreck in others imo. He's a smooth dancer but a lot of people are on to him. i like Chael but...

Was Lole in the room when Dana basically had a meltdown over this stuff. Didn't Dana say something along the lines of "Name any fuckin fighter and I will have him tested right now." And nobody spoke up ???How many times did Dana tells us the test the shit out Vitor? One random test and Vitor fails? This makes the UFC look horrible. Then you have the poster child of the UFC failing too. Add to that, you have a fighter who dodges the test entirely. So was Lole in the room or not?

This. And a two-faced Dana approved clownshow. I expect him to switch sides any day now.

....."Illegal" from the athletic commission's perspective. Not from the state's.
