Faber relegated to prelims for first time in UFC career

Since 2007, Urijah Faber has been one of the WEC's, then UFC's, biggest stars. In that time he has fought in eleven title fights, and if not, has always been a premier attraction.

However in his next bout with unheralded Alex Cacares, Faber finds himself in a less than ordinary position, a part of the preliminary card.

UFC officials recently finalized the fight card for the July 5, which takes place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and features a championship doubleheader.

However, prior to the five-fight main card, six fights are part of the prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the featured prelim slot, former title challenger Urijah Faber (30-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) takes on rising 135-pound contender Alex Caceres (10-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC). Faber, a former WEC champion who’s headlined and co-headlined major UFC events, is ranked No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings. Caceres, who’s riding a four-fight winning streak (with one no-contest), is an honorable mention.

The decision is likely part to a solid night of fights booked and that Faber is taking on an opponent that is not well known. It also could be just the opposite and the UFC is using Faber to draw fans in as a head liner for the preliminary card airing on FOX Sports 1.

He's against a pre-lim fighter so it makes sense.

Brimage comes to bang I'm guess they are thinking the hardcore fans know this and would tune in regardless and the hopes are a fight like that will be a great start to the paper view although fabers would be a better choice I see why he is headlining the prelim card

For me that idea backfires. Cheapens the ppv

I disagree cause faber is a more well rounded fighter than Sergio and he won't gass toward the end of the fight I see faber taking this one pretty easy

Normally I would say this was a mismatch, but seeing how Alex handled Pettis and how Barao dismantle Faber, I am willing to give Silva the benefit of the doubt.I don't suspect his will as big a mismatch I we think. If Alex pulls it off, it will the second time he has beaten highly promoted UFC fighter.

Sounds like one of the best fights they've used as ppv bait to date.
