Does Carano deserve an immediate title shot?

Last week UFC President Dana White says he will be signing Gina Carano next week, and previously has said she should receive an immediate title shot.

In ESPN's weekly segement, 'The Weigh-In' guest panelist Holly  Holm joined Brett Okamoto and Mike Huang to discuss the merit of a Carano title shot:

Holly Holm: Carano has been on the big show before, so she can handle the pressure. There are a lot of girls who have been working hard for a shot who might deserve it a little more than someone who has been out that long, but Carano has put a lot of time in before. She's earned her spot in certain ways. Who am I to say Carano is undeserving of an opportunity? I'll let the promoter make those decisions.

Brett Okamoto: At first, I was opposed to the idea of Carano coming in off a five-year layoff and getting an immediate title shot. It felt a little ridiculous. But after watching Ronda Rousey's plast two fights last a combined 92 seconds, I'm far less against it. If Rousey is going to run through opponents anyway, she might as well do it against someone who can help her sell the fight. I'd still like to see Rousey face top contender Cat Zingano first, though.

Mike Huang: No. Despite the marquee allure and star power of a Carano-Rousey matchup, the fact is Carano hasn't fought in nearly five years. It might even do a disservice to the sport if she does get a title shot immediately. Let her get her legs back and shake off the cage rust with a couple of bouts. Let's not forget how brutally she lost to Cristiane Justino. And the sport has advanced since then.

"i think we all know there is something illegitimate about the line-cutting. But i think many of us will accept that it's good for WMMA. A lot of us will pay to see it and that's more money for the UFC and WMMA to grow."The UFC makes plenty of money with legit fights. They don't need the money from this fight to grow. Your point here makes absolutely no sense."Might as well have a "show fight" since everyone loses anyway."No. That's a ridiculous notion. There are people way ahead of Gina who deserve the fight (Zingano, Cyborg, etc.). How can the fans gain anything from a "show fight," when we know Gina is coming back from being away from MMA for 5 years, and lost her previous fight? Yeah, that's quite a show."It'll bring some cash help to Gina Carano who's movies have tanked, so we should feel good about that."I'm not even touching this one."YOu say it'll hurt WMMA, but i think enough people will rationalize the reasons to put it on. WMMA is going strong, and when the girls come out of the TUF house and we all watch the shit out of the show, the girls' league will get a boost of new blood. Gina's fight will fade away from public consciousness a few weeks later, and WMMA will continue it's upward trend."Just more excuses being made here. It seems like all you are doing is making excuses for the fight, rather than providing any rational argumentation for.

More like UFC needs a shot in the arm.

If Gina deserves an immediate title shot after being out of the sport for 5 years, it's based on marketability, not fighting merit (not to say she couldn't be a challenge).

You mean like GSP/Anderson? Or Anderson/Jones? Or Fedor/Brock? Dana can't make big fights, son. I'll be shocked if he makes this one, to be honest, because they haven't even hit the negotiations yet and Dana's already taking shots at Carano's "Hollywood lawyer" that he hasn't even met yet. If he does happen to pull this off though, is this really a big fight? If so, for who? Certainly not the hardcores based on the comments in this thread.

LOL no. This is a money grab by Zuffa, pure and simple. Don't even try to argue it, because it's a waste of time and energy.

Well, who else is gonna fight Ronda?

Poet of Gore site profile image

again, it is a sign of desperation that the UFC wants to make one of the biggest fights it can?   anyone who thinks cyborg vs ronda would sell more is just too butthurt over ronda to live in reality   what else is there? GSP is not active. weidman vs jbj? a good fight not really a possibility and still not as mainstream as ronda vs gina   so, what fight would you make that could 1) really happen in the world we live in 2) would sell more than ronda vs gina?
