Dr. AnnMaria De Mars appeared recently on MMA powerhouse Submission Radio, for a wide-ranging interview on all things Rousey, including Laila Ali, Fedor, the Olympics, and why Cris Cyorg is going to get her arm broken.

Dr. De Mars related first how she reacted to the news that her daughter wanted to try mixed martial arts.

I told her, ‘Ronda this is the stupidest f—ing idea I’ve ever heard in my life and coming from you that says a something, ‘cause you have come up with some dumbass ideas.’

I said ‘a lot of people in this family made sacrifices for you for two Olympics, and before that, paid for you to travel around the world to train, and now you have a little sister who’s going to high school soon, we have to save for her college; and you may have a dream to be a world champion, but I have a dream to retire someday. So I am not supporting able bodies, so no. Absolutely not. Dumb idea, don’t do it.’

The biggest potential fight for Rousey is of course Cris Cyborg, and mom doesn’t see it ending well for the Brazilian.

Oh, Ronda will break her arm,” said Dr. De Mars. “I can say that right now. I’ll tell you two things – Ronda will break her arm, and Ronda will not go up in weight. And the reason she won’t apparently is because Cris Cyborg has missed weight multiple times. So if you have her fight at 140, she’s going to show up at 145 or 150. So that’s the first thing. If she’s gonna miss 135, she can at least give Ronda 10 percent of the purse.

“And then secondly, she has kind of an inflated record, because if you look back at some of her matches, she’s fought woman who were 125 pounds and she’s 160. You know that’s like Ronda fighting her little sister and her saying ‘oh look at me, I’m so dominant.’ So I’m not impressed with her record, and of course failing the drug test thing.

“I almost feel like that’s sort of like when you get a DUI. That’s probably not the only time you were driving drunk. So I’d say her whole record is under suspicion; certainly the one match she got caught at is under suspicion – not suspicion, it’s proven. And then there have been – you could look them up – several matches where she missed weight and was 20 pounds or more heavier than the other person. So under those conditions and going bragging [about] how dominant you are does not impress me.

“And the other thing is; I love Ronda, she’s a great person, she has many many wonderful qualities, but one thing about her is she holds a grudge, and she will break Cris Cyborg’s arm.

I think the first time Ronda got her hands on her she will go down and Ronda would break her arm, and here’s why. Okay, Ronda had a match with this woman – one of her amateur fights. And I didn’t know anything about MMA and I was all nervous about it and I was talking to Jim Pedro Senior who was coaching Ronda through her last couple of Olympics, and I said ‘you know I’m reading what this woman said in the paper. She said, she’s going to try and stop Ronda from taking her to the ground, She’s going to try and fight her standing’ and I said ‘that’s exactly what you should do and you know I’m worried about this.’ Jimmy stopped me and he says ‘ok let me get this straight. This woman’s plan is to stop Ronda from throwing her and armbarring her’. And I said ‘yes’. And he said ‘well listen kid, I took Ronda all over Europe and all over the world and coached her, and every woman in Judo that was their plan too. You saw how well that worked out for them’.

“You know Ronda got a silver in the world’s, she got a bronze in the Olympics, she’s won the junior worlds, she’s won a lot of international Judo tournaments, and this is against women who have decades of experience trying to stop Olympic level Judo players from throwing and armbarring them. So saying that Cris Cyborg is somehow magically going to be able to do that when Ronda’s been training this since she’s 11? I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think the first time Ronda gets her hands on her she’s going to knock her down and break her arm.

Another name that recently came up as a potentially opponent was, bizarrely, 5′ 10″ 170 lbs., retired professional boxer, and youngest daughter of The Greatest, Laila Ali.

The only way I could possibly see that happening – and I wouldn’t put it past her – would be something for charity,” said Dr. DeMars. “One of the things that people don’t know about Ronda is that she does a lot of things to raise money for charity; for the world’s food program, for health services here in Los Angeles, for conservation, endangered species. So she does a ton of things like that. So I mean the only way I could possibly see it happening – and I don’t know Laila Ali at all – but if she’s the kind of person that does charity things, I could see them putting on some big thing to raise money for, you know; say there was another disaster like the tsunami, or hurricane Katrina, or something, I could see them doing something like that. But otherwise, no.

Fans have speculated that Rousey might make one more run at The Olympics, to try to secure gold. Last week Rousey herself, who has the Olympic rings tattoed on her pelvis and the Olympic motto tattoed on her right ankle, said she thought she could still win Olympic gold if she wanted to.

I still believe I would be able to win the Olympics, she said. That takes 100 percent of your energy. It has to be the No. 1 priority in your life.

Leaving Judo for MMA cannot have been an easy step. She did so against the wishes of her coach, two-time Olympic bronze medalist Jimmy Pedro.

He pretty much told me to go f— myself, said Rousey in 2013. He didn’t want to help me.

Rousey said she and Pedro haven’t spoken much since. Her mother was asked if there was any chance she would return to Judo.

None,” said Dr. DeMars. “She’s not going to fight for free. She makes a ton of money doing what she’s doing and Ronda’s very smart. One of the things people don’t know about her is how smart she really is. She went to a special school here for kids who were excellent at math and science, and we always thought when she was younger that she would always get her PHD in Oceanography or something like that. So she realizes that she has a very short window remaining as an athlete and her opportunity is to make a few million dollars in those remaining years, rather than go to the Olympics and fight for free. She’s not that dumb.”

Dr. DeMars also deftly responded to Fedor Emelianenko’s recent remarks that MMA was for men, only.

Well you know that’s his opinion, I disagree with it,” she said.

Ronda’s mom also responded to talk about her daughter beating elite men in MMA.

I just think it’s all a joke,” she said. It’s sort of like saying ‘could the guy who won the lightweight division in boxing, could he beat the heavyweight?’ It’s just seems sort of a silly thing to be having a debate about, you know?

And lastly, Dr. DeMars indicated she has a new understanding of mixed martial arts, and was clear she would be a part of the sport over Judo.

“I would be more likely to go into MMA,” she said. “I would probably go and win the world title and then go off to graduate school like I did. You know, I like math [laughs]
