Anthony Pettis becomes first fighter in MMA to make cover of Wheaties
Since 1934, General Mills has placed athletes on its breakfast cereal Wheaties, to highlight the slogan “The Breakfast of Champions.” The honor has been extended meagerly to combat sports. In 80 years, only four boxers made the cover, Max Baer, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and Kenny Norton. Thus the odds against a mixed martial artists making the cover seemed slimmer than this guy.
However, there was a massive push to get UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis to become the first athlete from mixed martial arts to get on a Wheaties box.
The fans voted, and it worked!
“This is huge for the sport. Thank you to everyone who voted. December 6th I will silence the critics.”
Curiously, while Pettis made, his tattoos reportedly did not.
Pettis will now coach opposite Gilbert Melendez on the latest season on TUF, and fight him at UFC 181 in December.
Pettis now joins a truly select group of athletes…
And who is most likely to be next from the MMA world??!?
