Barao injured, possibly out of UFC 162 title defense
Renan Barao was scheduled to defend his UFC bantamweight interim title at UFC 162 against Eddie Wineland, but a report today from Brazil announced that the fight is now in jeopardy:
According to a report from Brazilian news outlet TATAME on Saturday (May 18, 2013), the 26-year-old suffered a foot injury and is unable to compete at the June 15, 2013 event set to take place at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Barao (30-1) last competed at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in February where he successfully defended his interim title for the first time against Michael McDonald with a fourth-round arm-triangle choke.
Following the initial report, MMAJunkie reporter John Morgan tweeted an update of Barao’s status:
Was just told that Barao has a medical exam scheduled for Monday, at which point the final decision on his status will be made.
