Bonnar suspended one year for failed PED test
Last month’s UFC 153 event took place in Brazil, where there are millions of passionate MMA fans, but not athletic commission. Regulatory duties were handled by former Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and current UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner.
All 24 fighters on the card were tested by an independent agency, for both recreational and performance enhancing drugs. Two failed the screen: Stephan Bonnar, who tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone, and Dave Herman, for marijuana metabolites.
Both fighters admitted to taking the banned substances and agreed to suspensions.
Ratner now reports Bonnar will be suspended a year, until Oct. 13, 2013.
Ratner expects to make a decision on Herman’s suspension later this week. Although this is the second failed test for both Herman and Bonnar, Herman’s suspension is expected to be less drastic, a matter of months, combined with an education and rehab program.
“We feel very strongly that there’s a big difference between PEDs and marijuana,” said Ratner. “We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it.”
