Controversial Palhares Split Decision loss changed to No Contest

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Rousimar Palhares and Shamil Amirov fought at Fight Nights Global 73 on 73 September 4, 2017 in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, with the latter winning a controversial Split Decision. Palhares’ manager, Alex Davis, wrote a letter of protest to the event promoters, arguing that Palhares clearly won Round 2 and Round 3.

The process for contesting an event result in Russia is different to that in North America where event results can only be overturned in the event of collusion, an arithmetic error, or a misunderstanding of the rules. The bout was reviewed by the government recognized Russian MMA Union, and the bout result was changed to a draw.

“If fighters are not happy with the decision, fighters themselves, or their management, send an official protest letter to the Russian MMA Union,” saidFight Nights Global president Kamil Gadzhiev to MMAjunkie. “They invite three new judges, they watch again, and they can change the decision. Sometimes, they change the decision.”

The quick action was appreciated by Davis.

“Different than here in the U.S., they were willing to recognize and correct an obvious error,” said Davis. “When I started sending my guys over to Russia to fight, there was some worry as how we would be treated. And there were some organizational problems, which are normal. But turns out that the guys that are going there are being well and fairly treated. This opens up a new horizon for fighters.”
