ESPN reporter retracts statement that Jones not paid by Gatorade

Saturday, September 21, 2013

Jon Jones agent Malki Kawa recently announced a milestone for a figure in MMA – a Gatorade sponsorship for UFC lightheavyweight Jon Jones.

“This is a historic day for UFC competitors,” said Kawa. “Gatorade is one of the most recognized brands in the world. Jon has earned this relationship through hard work, determination, and pure dominance inside the Octagon.”

Then ESPN’s Darren Rovell made some curious tweets, saying Gatorade was allowing Jones to wear their logo, but that he was not getting paid anything.

•Despite reports that Jon Jones has signed a Gatorade deal, Gatorade official says there is no contract, no $ changing hands.
•Gatorade official says company has sent product to Jon Jones, will allow him to wear logo, but not paying him $
•Gatorade does not do standard one offs like Jones, but are clearly seeking to test waters.

Next to tweet was Kawa.

Don’t believe everything you hear…

Turns out Kawa was right.

Last post from Rovell was a retraction of sorts.

Jon Jones’ 1-fight deal with Gatorade does involve some compensation. He is not wearing their logo for free.
