Fl. family arrested for backyard MMA event
Three people were arrested Friday after an investigation into a report of an illegal sporting event at a Lehigh Acres, Florida home.
Deputies say Angela Harrison, Brandon Harrison and his stepson Gauge Ford promoted and planned an unlicensed mixed martial arts event in November. They each face a third degree felony charge of promoting an illegal boxing match.
On Thursday, deputies learned that an unauthorized sporting event was held at 1407 Hightower Avenue South in Lehigh Acres. The allegations were that several juveniles met at the home to engage in a mixed martial arts event.
Detectives with the Bravo District Criminal Investigations Division accessed Facebook accounts including video posts showing teens and young adult males engaged in full contact fighting. A school resource officer at East Lee County High School helped to identify and contact some of the individuals in the videos.
Two months prior to the event, Ford, 17, began recruiting fellow students, according to witnesses.
The participants would wear padded gloves, pair up with an opponent and fight until one of them stopped because of their injuries.
Deputies say the investigation revealed that Ford, Angela and Brandon Harrison promoted and planned the event.
