Florian: Few even understand the realm Rousey’s in

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Former UFC middleweight, welterweight, lightweight, and featherweight fighter, and currently analyst and color commentator Kenny Florian and his hair appeared recently on UFC AfterBuzz TV.

To the likely delight of the hardcore fanbase on the UG, talk turned to Ronda Rousey, and whether she will get a true contender soon.

“Man, honestly? No, I don't,” said Florian as transcribed by MMAFighting. “Not at 135 pounds. I don't see it happening. She is a beast in all aspects. A lot of it comes from the mental level. There's very few people who even understand that realm that she's at. It's scary.”

One potential contender is former Strikeforce 145 women's champion Gina Carano. Florian was asked about Carano getting a title shot straight way.

“It's a lot to ask.” said Florian. “It's a lot to ask of any athlete to have years of not preparing for a fight. Years of Ronda Rousey getting better. Gina's been so focused on making movies and other things. It's a lot to ask of Gina to go, 'OK. Here, we're going to feed you Ronda Rousey.' That's a tough thing. I would like to see Gina compete against someone else.”

“I think Gina is very talented. I think she's very good. I think that would be a huge fight if she got signed by the UFC. Quite possibly the biggest fight you can make in the UFC right now, men or women. But here's the problem with Ronda Rousey. She is so damn talented and has so many years competing at this level for years. Here's a girl that at 16 years old was on a plane cutting weight for the world championships or the Olympics.

“To have that mental mindset is a complete different level that few male athletes in the UFC understand. You have the Yoel Romero's, Daniel Cormier. Guys who have been there. It's a complete different level when you're talking about the Olympics.”

Florian was of course talking about Rousey as a fighter, but she is equally skilled at generating controversy. In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole, Rousey called for zero tolerance policy on failed PED tests in MMA.

“I think it should be like the Olympics,” said Rousey. “If you f— up once, you’re not going to the f—ing Olympics. There should be a zero tolerance policy where if you’re caught doing anything, you should be done forever.”

So what do you think UG?
•Can you understand the realm Ronda Rousey is at?
•Should MMA have a zero tolerance policy to PEDs?
?•Compared to God, oxygen, and monkeys, how cool is Kenny Florian's hair?

Ronda Rousey fights Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5.
