For Belcher with a fractured spine, & Belfort, 151 collapse ‘a blessing’

Saturday, August 25, 2012

While the collapse of UFC 151 was a crushing blow to the other fighters on the card, to the UFC, and to the fans, there are at least a couple of people who it made happy – Alan Belchert and Vitor Belfort.

One of the few fighters who made out better than before based on the recent saga surrounding UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones’ next title-defense is apparently Alan Belcher, the very man Jones’ next opponent – Vitor Belfort – was supposed to fight before being named as a last minute contender to the divisional crown. While Belfort’s removal from the bout may have seemed like a negative on the surface, as it turns out Belcher would have had to withdraw from the match-up anyways for health-related reasons.

Fortunately, as bad as the injury sounds, it is apparently minor enough to only have him sidelined for a month. In fact, the Roufusport staple already has an opponent in mind for his return to the Octagon, Chris Weidman.

The UFC currently has two cards scheduled for November with the most likely candidate being UFC 154 in Montreal. Belcher has won his last four fights with finishes in each, while Weidman remains unbeaten in his career and is considered to be one of the top middleweight contenders.

Belfort too experienced the collapse as a dream come true.

“I was at the house, relaxing, enjoying myself with my friends last night around 12 midnight,” he told “I was reading my Bible, Proverbs 1:33. It’s we should not fear anything. Then my cousin that works with me came up to me and said, ‘Hey, bro, we just got your contract to fight Jon Jones in Canada.'”

“I went to my phone, and I see a text from Lorenzo (Fertitta) on my phone: ‘Are you willing to fight Jones?’ So, I jumped to the ceiling. I called my wife. I couldn’t speak. Everybody was shouting.”

“Lorenzo said, ‘So many fighters have become divas. They need beauty salons. As soon as he asked me, I said, ‘Lorenzo, I come from Carlson Gracie’s time. I come from the old days.’ I said, ‘Let’s do it.'”
