UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker won a thrilling split decision over Yoel Romero at UFC 225 on Saturday night. The question now is who Bobby Knuckles next thrilling fight will be against?

Champion Robert Whittaker
1. Yoel Romero
2. Luke Rockhold
3. Chris Weidman
4. Kelvin Gastelum
5. Jacare Souza

Three fights in a row vs. Romero would be unthinkable, as Whittaker won both, and Romero failed to make weight his last two fights, each of which was a title shot.

Rockhold is coming off a loss to Romero so he’s out. And he’s 1-2 his last three.

Jacare is 3-3 his last six, and coming off a Split Decision loss to Gastelum, so he’s out.

Weidman is just 1-3 his last four. But he’s coming off a win over Gastelum.

Gastelum, by contrast, is 4-1 with 1 NC his last six. And the NC was a win overturned after he tested positive for the demon weed marijuana. But, the one loss was to Weidman.

Gastelum spoke with Dann Stupp and Ken Hathaway for MMAjunkie following UFC 225, and made the case for himself.

“I haven’t been told I’m next in line, but I mean, who else would be in line?” asked Gastelum. “I mean, [Chris Weidman] – maybe?

“I’m one of the most active middleweights fighting in the the top 10 among middleweights worldwide. I’ve been winning. I mean, I lost one against Weidman, but out of my last six, I’ve won five – not counting the no-contest.”

“That’s two title fights [Romero] missed weight at already. So, I’m shaking my head a little bit, but at the time, it’s like, I’ve missed weight, you know? So who am I to criticize?”
