Guymon vs. Roberts targeted for UFC 121
A welterweight match-up between Mike “The Joker” Guymon (12-3-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Daniel Roberts (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is targeted for UFC 121.
Sources close to the event today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that verbal agreements are in place with bout agreements expected to be signed shortly.
UFC 121 takes place Oct. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and features a heavyweight title match between current champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Cain Velasquez.
Guymon and Roberts’ octagon records mirror each other. Guymon, an 11-year veteran of the sport, got his first UFC win in May when he sent Yoshiyuki Yoshida packing with a unanimous decision nod at UFC 113.
The affable Guymon banged up his knee during the three-round scrap, though he has since been nursing it and will be ready to go for the Southern California event. Earlier today, he thanked his fans for bombarding the UFC with requests to secure him a spot on UFC 121.
After a lifetime of pining for a shot in the big show, Guymon did not get an easy break for his octagon debut. He met young lion Rory MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 20 and fell prey to an armbar in the first round.
