Henderson wants to stay in UFC, but will test free agency
Former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson earned a split decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night 79 in Seoul, Korea. It was his second win a row, have defeated Brandon Thatch in the Fight of the Night earlier this year. Both bouts were at welterweight. He previously dropped two in a row at lightweight.
It was the last fight on his UFC contract.
In Seoul, after the decision was announced, he took of his UFC gloves and left them in the Octagon, a ceremonial representation of the end of his current contract with the organization.
Henderson said he intends to retire in the UFC, but wants to try free agency.
“When I retire, it will be retiring in the UFC – I know that for sure,” said Henderson to MMAjunkie. “But I’m going to test the market, yes.”
“I’m not trying to send any message of any type, but if it plays out a certain way, I want to have some pretty good memories to go out on.”
Next step presumably is testing his worth with Bellator and perhaps ONE Championship, and weighing that against what the UFC offers. May the best organization win.
