Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva not coming soon

Sunday, September 25, 2011

The  purpose of MMA is to determine who the world’s best fighter is. That is why a champion vs champion bout is even more compelling to fans than a title bout. GSP vs. Anderson Silva would be a far bigger fight than say GSP vs. Jon Fitch, or The Spider vs. Chael Sonnen.

With both Anderson Silva and Jon Jones appearing to be unbeatable in their division a riot of mixed martial arts fans want a superfight between lighheavyweight Champion Jones and middleweight champion Silva.

UFC president Dana White said as late as last week that with with just 14 fights on his record, he didn’t agree Jones should be as high in the pound-for-pound rankings as he is. Last night changed that.

“When I went into the [Octagon], he said, ‘Will you give me my pound-for-pound respect now?'” White said of Jones. “I said, ‘You did it.’ The great thing right now is how serious Rampage took this fight; [Jones] beat the best Rampage.”

However, Silva vs Jones is not going to happen soon, or maybe ever.

“The problem is this [light heavyweight] division is stacked,” White said. “He has a lot of fights ahead of him. The guys who have been fighting at 205 have those slots and they deserve the respect of a title fight before any superfight.

“And, a lot of people don’t really think about this, [Anderson Silva] is 37 years old.”

Jones’ manager Malki Kawa concurred. “Any fight that interests Jon is a fight that interests me, but that fight is nowhere on the horizon,” Kawa said. “At some point in time in the future, Jon will be fighting in the biggest fights in UFC history.

“But we’re not looking at that. We’re looking at Rashad [Evans] and the other 205-ers.”
