Josh Barnett UG Q&A
MMA great Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett came on the UnderGround recently for a wide-ranging Q&A.
From: Josh Barnett
Listen up you primative screw-heads! The Warmaster is HERE.
Quiver in fear!
What’s your favourite Goatwhore song?
That’s a really tough one. I am very partial to “The All Destroying” which I have had written on my trunks and banners in the past
The new album is so damn good I have been rocking it a lot since it came out. Just tell me this isn’t brutal!
MMA: Ring or Cage?
Ring is a faster fight platform and I like how you can trap folks in corners.
Overall though…dirt and stone walled pit like in Conan The Barbarian.
SMC Blackhearts –
Please tell us how you first met and started training with Eric Paulson. Do you still train with him? If so how often? How much has influenced your personal grappling/ MMA style? Thanks!
I met him back when I was 19…so shortly after the dark ages…
Matt Hume brought me to take his seminar and as I was already familiar with how talented a fighter he was I kept studying his material on tapes and taking his seminars whenever he came to Seattle.
when it was time for a change he was really one of the only people I could imagine training me.
Erik is part of a mold of fighters like myself and Matt Hume who are very well rounded and crebral when it comes to fighting. He has influenced me in many ways even before training under him ditrectly.
pureso power!!!!!!!!! do you miss wrestling for njpw!?
I wouldn’t mind mixing it up in the ring with those guys again at all. I owe Nagata-san some suplexes!
Josh- King mo recently stated that “Pro wrestling was three times harder then MMA”. Would you agree or disagree with this statement, and why?
Physically it is very tough and there isn’t a lot of downtime between matches either. Plus “the show must go on” whether you get hurt or not.
The most difficult aspect to pro wrestling though is developing ring psychology and character. Much more difficult than people realize. This is whay most MMA guys wouldn’t stand a chance doing pro wrestling. Do all the moves you want but if there’s no story being told and you’re pulling the crowd into it emotionally then you’ve failed.
World Peace’s Left Elbow
Greatest band you’ve ever seen perform live?
Here’s a list:
All That Remains
The Black Dahlia Murder
of course THE ALL MIGHTY BOLT THROWER!
Sometimes it’s simply a matter of the venure, crowd, night. etc. I saw BTBAM at Slidebar and it was so intense and amazing. It was great seeing them on a bigger stage too but different vibe
Team GDP –
What are your thoughts on Rogan’s podcast? How much do you enjoy doing them?
Just listened to your most recent appearance, great job.
I really dig chatting with Joe in general and I like being able to reach folks about things other than MMA and fighting.
I hope to come back as a guest as often as Joe would have me.
Funaki Masakatsu #1
Josh, how big of an influence were the top Pancrase fighters (Funaki, Ken Shamrock, Suzuki) on your career? Which one of those three was the biggest influence?
Those guys were part of the style that helped define Matt hume my first teachers style and even Sayama and his guys worked with Matt and of course trained Erik Paulson. It’s no mistake that I have stayed in the company of the ancestors of Gotch and Billy Robinson. I believe in the style and in how they trained.
What is your most cherished mma moment?
Winning the King of Pancrase title from Yuki Kondo.
It’s such an important piece of MMA history and my original coach, Matt Hume, was in the first KOP tournament. 10 years later I was able to come back to Pancrase and claim that title and in a way, complete a circle that started with my trainer. Also, I went in there with Enson Inoue and NJPW prowrestlers in my corner and I was carrying the flag of NJPW. It was a big moment and I was very proud to bring honor and respect to pro wrestling.
And to hold the same belt Bas, Funaki, Ken, Frank, Guy, Kondo, Schilt, Suzuki, etc held….WOW
Oh and what was your first sexual experience like?
Violent, bloody, horrifying, filled with tortured screams, and everything was on fire.
To be honest…not much has changed.
The Internet has been wanting to see you vs frank Mir for a long time. Have you guys ever trained with each other or have you ever entertained fighting him? If so what advantages do you think you would have over him? What would you have to watch out for?
Never trained with him and I entertain fighting everyone. Even people that pass me on the street. Granny at the crosswalk? I wonder how’d she like to taste a low kick to her leg and walker!
I think I am born menace to humanity and I would finsh him. It’s just how I fight. Frank is a guy with great killer instinct so don’t give him an opening to hurt you especially with a hold.
Barnett as a friend of Fedors ….what are your thoughts in his career and 3 looses at the tail end? Did MMA pass him?
i think he was simply ready to put it all behind him. He retired becasue his heart wasn’t there and that’s the way I see it. Yes he had some losses at the end but I truly believe it is becasue he wasn’t motivated not because he wasn’t capable.
Josh, I am a journalism student and would love to write a feature on you.
What made you get into MMA?
what is the most memorable fight of your career?
which fighter/martial artist/wrestler/athlete influenced you the most or is there any fighter you admire the most?
what was the most devastating loss of your career and what did it teach you?
what are some advantages that your catch wrestling style has over bjj?
what was it like to be part of mma’s huge growth/popularity surge over the years?
any cool stories about your dealings with pride/DSE?
what is harder on the body: pro wrestling or mma?
who do you want first in the ufc?
Thanks Josh, always been a fan.
Thanks but….you think I’m going to answer all that!?
Rear Naked Chode
What was the first death metal album you heard?
Death was my first death metal band.
Who have you beaten the living death out of and felt bad about later?
No one. Ever. Not even that paraplegic. Not even that Nun.
Fastest car you own?
No clue on top speed but at 150 it handles like it’s on rails.
683 rear wheel HP, 604 rear wheel torque
Rear Naked Chode
What is your favorite submission, if you have one, and why?
ball gag and ropes.
Compared to most top level fighters, you seem to have a lot else going; cars, pro wrestling etc.
If/when you get back to the UFC, do you plan to focus closer to 100% on fighting or keep the status quo? And… Do you think outside interests have attributed to your longevity in the sport (not so much injury-wise but focus and motivation).
Hmm. Mentally…I’m sure it does. But I trained and acquired so much technical skills over the years I don’t have to out athlete guys. I out fight them.
chokeyou – Two questions…
#1 – Do you regret part or all of the way you handled your previous relationship with ZUFFA?
#2 What percentage of the heavies on the current UFC roster could last an entire round with you?
Two too many.
I do and I don’t. I do because it was handled entirely the wrong way and was very young and not aware of the damage that was being done at the time on my behalf. It’s no secret that negotiations can be very tricky anyways. It didn’t have to go the way it did.
The don’t is simply because I ended up in Japan and doing what I did there i wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. I got to see and do things 99% of the fighters in this sport never will. It was an amazing life experience living and training over there. Fighting and prowrestling
#2 an entire round? Not many. Although i do have a tendency to put the hammer down in the 2nd…I’d walk over most guys there.
Josh, do you play any musical instruments?
And you are the best! Can’t wait to see you in the UFC!
I have guitar I just started messing around on and while I did take some lessons 20+ years ago things sure have changed!
My hands are som much tighter and rigid than when I was 11…it’s so damn hard to play LOL
Glad your here how close/ far apart are you with the ufc?
EVILYOSHIDA – Greetings Josh,
Pride or UFC?
I like anywhere there is a chance to commit murder.
But those PRIDE days….never again. It was a magical moment i don’t think we’ll see twice.
How good was Yuki Kondo in your opinion?
Also how strong is Yoshida’s grip strength?
Kondo is a gamer and has a lot of years on his body, even by the time he fought in PRIDE.
Yoshida is VERY strong. I remember the first day training with him and trying to finish a Double Wristlock on him. Man was I surprised!
Slayer or sepultura?
ustin bieber, Dana white, and Roseanne bar
Fuck one, kill one, marry one….. Go!
Fuck Bieber – He’s a cutie and all smooth probably.
Kill Roseanne – That voice would drive anyone to murder
Marry Dana – We’d make a great power couple: JoDana. I’m the top though.
Have you ever been offered to wrestle in the WWE?
Wouldn’t mind changing that though.
I’m huge fan from Croatia, and i enjoyed your podcasts a lot (you should start your own podcast). I have few questions.
•how would you comment CroCop’s decline in UFC? He was brought as GP winner (btw, i’d really love that there was a fight between you two when both are 100% ready with no freak injury endings etc.) and then he failed to meet the expectations of UFC
•are you planning to do any catch wrestling instructionals besides those that are already out?
•any seminars on your schedule for europe or?
Thnx and good luck against Nandor. Please finish him fast, his last few fights were horrible, especially the last one against Zahariev were i fell asleep after 7 minutes of “fighting”.
I don’t really know why CroCop had such a bad run in the UFC. Really stumped
I am! Look for more from Scientific Wrestling in the near future.
Nothing planned but open and wanting to.
Josh you I mentioned your into heavy metal….what’s your favourite band?
There’s mamy but here’s one:
Do you think you could submit the un submitable John Cena?
I’d CRUSH Cena. Beat him pillar to post. Put the boots to his flat skull and then stretch him till he pissed himself.
Pacquiao vs mayweather. Who takes it?
With Money May it’s hard to hit what you can’t touch.
Maybe if Pacquaio can exploit Mayweather’s and 50 Cent’s ongoing homosexual tiff he can throw Mayweather’s mental state off. Those two lovers sure are in a nasty spat.
Can you beat Overeem and if so, how?
Can the UFC depend on you?
I can beat anybody.
By putting him in an area that he’s weakest and exploiting my strengths over his.
Depend on me? I can carry a show that’s for sure.
Prime Fedor or Cain Velasquez?
Saw the promo vid you did for DDP Yoga, how often do you participate in it and how has it helped/impacted your health and wellness overall and in regards to inside the cage?
I haven’t kept up with it much but that’s my fault. I should though as it’s a great recovery system. I felt AWESOME after doing it.
I fully endorse it.
Josh, what are your chances of workin a contract out with UFC In your opinion?
Are you willing to take less pay than SF gave you?
Of course there is. It’s all about coming to an agreement both parties can be happy with.
I just leave that up to my scumbag manager. So slippery he is…
Joshua J King – Rare,Mid rare or medium?
General red meat – Med rare
Babies – Still kicking
Will you be watching Shayna on the Invicta FC PPV tomorrow?
And what are your thoughts on WMMA in general? I know that you’re always bigging up Shayna and Mega Megu.
You know this…maaaaaaan!
WAR QUEEN OF SPADES!
What’s the biggest dif between Catch and BJJ?
Mainly in that in catch there’s not a lot you can’t do. Neck, Leg, Foot, Wrist, finger locks, etc. Also it’s backbone is stand up wrestling and has a more takedown and top control philosophy.
Jiu-Jitsu translates to “The Gentle Art”
Catch is “The Violent Art”
Ok. Thanks for coming on chatting folks.
