Manager explains Mousasi UFC 176 frustration

Wednesday, July 09, 2014

When UFC 176 was canceled following a neck injury suffered by UFC featherweight champion José Aldo, the co-main Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza rematch was of course postponed. Mousasi, training in Holland at the time, expressed frustration that he found out about it on Twitter.

Mousasi's manager Nima Safapour reached out to MMAFighting's Ariel Helwani, and detailed the circumstances around the postponing of the fight.

“Zuffa reached out to us in advance shortly before the media became aware that the event was postponed,” said Safapour. “However, due to the time zone differences between Holland and Vegas, combined with how quickly the news hit the media, there was an honest miscommunication between the parties.

“Any fighter is going to feel frustrated that an event has been canceled because a lot goes into these fights on a lot of different levels. Especially when one is competing at an elite level within the Top-5 world rankings. We are working on it with Zuffa, and believe we will have everything resolved shortly.  We understand it is a challenging situation for everyone.”

UFC president Dana White has announced that the Mousasi vs. Jacare rematch has been rescheduled to UFC Fight Night 50 on Sept. 5 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Conn.

Mousasi won the first match via upkick from Hell on September 23, 2008 in Japan. The fight was the DREAM 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix Final, and earned Mousasi the inaugural DREAM Middleweight Championship.

UFC Fight Night 50 shaping up to be a high-level UFN, with five fights announced to date:
Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza
Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Chiesa
Sean Soriano vs. Andre Fili
Matt Mitrione vs. Derrick Lewis
Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell

It is not known yet if Mousasi vs. Jacare will be the main event or the co-main.
