Mixed Martial Arts bout 18 months before UFC 1

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

The UFC debuted on 11/12/93. However, mixed rules bouts appeared sporadically for over 100 years previously.

In a ‘work’ both contestants know the match is fake and the finish is predetermine. In a ‘fix’ one contestant thinks it is real, and the other knows the ending. A ‘shoot’ is a genuine fight. On 5/8/92 the Kiyoshi Tamura and Matthew Saad Muhammad met in a legitimate shoot, for the Japanese UWFI organization.

Muhammad was listed as number 24 on Ring Magazine’s list of 100 greatest punchers of all time, won the WBC world light heavyweight crown in 1979, and 1998 was became a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Tamura was a professional wrestler, who moved over to MMA and holds wins over Jeremy Horn, Renzo Gracie, Ikuhisa Minowa, Nobuhiko Takada, Pat Miletich, and held Frank Shamrock to a draw at a time when Shamrock was reigning UFC champion.
