Nelson: McGregor may never fight in MMA again

Friday, April 21, 2017

Gunnar Nelson, UFC welterweight and friend of Conor McGregor’s for a decade, appeared recently on Submission Radio for a wide-ranging interview. Notorious is next having a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, perhaps in September. And after that, Nelson says that knowing McGregor, he might never fight again.

“You never know what he’s going to do next,” said Nelson. “If he beats Mayweather, I’m not sure that he will ever fight again, to be honest. I don’t know, but I could see him just floating off and doing something else crazy. But otherwise, maybe he’ll fight Khabib or something next if Khabib is in shape. I don’t know, there’s something wrong with [Khabib’s] kidneys or something after that cut. We’ll see. I don’t know what’s he gonna do. But he’s just focusing on one thing at a time and right now it’s Floyd Mayweather and I’m looking forward to that myself.”

Wait, never fight again?

“I’m basing it on that he wants to go bigger every time,” explained Nelson. “And if he beats Mayweather – like, he’s taken the two belts, and then he beats Mayweather in this huge superfight, and I’m not sure what he’s gonna see as a next challenge or a next thing that he wants to do. I just don’t really see what he wants to come into the UFC again for. I’m not sure. Obviously, there’s always something. But he’s also having a baby and yeah, I’m not sure where his mind is gonna be. He’s gonna have a ton of money anyway. We’ll see. Maybe he’ll do another boxing match or something if it goes well. Maybe he’ll get more money there and be more interested in that. I don’t know. We’ll see, I guess. I have no idea.”

Nelson has a fighting style that began with karate, as does Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. A fight between the two would be popular with the hardcore fanbase. However, Nelson says he is having a hard time getting any fight.

“I’m struggling a little bit getting an opponent,’ he said. “I don’t know, I think a lot of them are matched up and so we will have to see. I know Wonderboy is probably not looking to fight me at the moment, but he said that we will end up facing each other. And, you know, that’s the way how I see it anyway. I always said that I don’t mind who I fight, like in which order I’ll fight those guys. I’ll definitely end up fighting him and the other guys as well. So we’ll see. I’ll get an opponent.”

His next opponent may be not Wonderboy but Neil Magny.

“Yeah, I think,” said Nelson. “I don’t know, I think he’s injured but I’m not sure, but I think he’s injured. But that would have been something that would have made a lot of sense. But I don’t know when that would happen, but I think he’s injured at the moment. But yeah, definitely, he’s somebody that would make sense for a next fight, you know, for everyone.”

“I want to get to fight the top guys in the division and I’m ready and it’s just a matter of who will fight me next and we can keep climbing. That’s my view on it. I don’t know, I think I’m ranked maybe nine at the moment or something like that. I don’t really follow these ranks too much, but definitely I’m ready just to fight these top guys. I did take the fight against Jouban and that kind of shows that I’ll take a fight against somebody that’s ranked below me and give them a chance. So I think the other guys should do the same.”
