White on CM Punk: It should be a wrap
Mixed martial arts is a weird sport – it has no controlling nonprofit body. You don’t get into Superbowl playoff just because you sell a lot of jerseys, you have to get in fairly, on merit. That’s how real sports work.
When CM Punk retired from the WWE, he decided he wanted to try MMA. His combat sports background consisted of a green belt in kenpo. But he was a massive PPV draw, so the UFC was in a position where they had to sign him or a rival would; so they signed him.
Then Punk started to train, with arguably the best trainer in the sport, Duke Roufus. Unfortunately, CM Punk has no talent, at all. After two years of by every account hard training, he fought an actual fighter and lost instantly, showing nothing. Then he trained hard for two more years, and fought again Saturday night, catching a three-round beating from photographer and sometimes boxer and kickboxer Mike Jackson.
CM Punk, real name Phil Brooks, 39, is by every account a good, smart, tough, game, honest, disciplined, hardworking, and engaging man. But he has no talent for fighting. At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White indicated that the now long, strange trip had come to a close.
“Listen, he got clipped a lot in that fight, and it looked like he was hurt bad a couple of times. He stayed in there, he went for three rounds,” said White said at the UFC 225 post-fight press conference, as transcribed by Shaun Al-Shatti for MMA Fighting.
“It should be a wrap. The guy’s 39 years old. I love the guy. He’s the nicest guy in the world. We gave him two shots, and he had a lot of heart tonight in this fight, and yeah, I think he should call it a wrap.”
Punk tweeted that he was alive.
You win some, you lose some! I’m 1-1 this week and I’ll take it! Thanks to my team, my family, my friends, and THE FANS! Wouldn’t be here without any of you. Respect to @TheTruthJackson, thanks for the fight! You only live once, and… I’M ALIVE! pic.twitter.com/UPPGFpx4iS

Punk reportedly went to the hospital post-fight, but check out ok.
