Yoel Romero failed to make weight for an interim UFC welterweight title fight vs. Luke Rockhold, and won in wild, spectacular fashion, but not title. In Romero’s next fight, vs. division champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 225 Saturday night, he missed weight again. Again it was a wild, spectacular fight, but there was no title on the line, Romero lost a split decision.

Whittaker suffered a broken hand in Round 1.

Romero suffers questions about where he goes next. When you miss weight twice in a row, is there any rational reason you should get a third try?

During a media scrum prior to the fight but post weigh-ins, UFC president Dana White said Romero should move up.

“If he wins, I think he should move up to 205 pounds and fight the No. 1 contender to see who fights for the title,” said White, as transcribed by MMAjunkie.

White likes Romero vs. Gustafsson. A win would get Romero a title shot at Daniel Cormier who is preparing for a superfight vs. heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic.

However, the jump of 20 pounds is too much. This example perfectly illustrates the need for a new division at 195, part of the California State Athletic Commissioner Andy Foster’s 10 Point Plan to fight the culture of extreme weight cutting in mixed martial arts.

White also discussed former welterweight and light heavyweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s stated intention to drop to 155 for a monster fight vs. either champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or former champ Conor McGregor.

“He just fought at 185 pounds and didn’t defend the title,” said White. “What, I’m going to have him fight down there? First of all, I don’t even know if he can make the weight. … And what has he done in that division to deserve a fight with either one of those guys? The answer is nothing.”

“I think Khabib is a massive fight with Conor. I think that’s the fight to happen right now. Listen, if Georges St-Pierre wants to move to 155, prove he can make it and fight the No. 1 contender down there. Then absolutely I’d do it.”

This is a bright negotiation tactic on White’s part. GSP vs. either fighter is a monster PPV.

White was also asked about the potential return of Brock Lesnar..

“I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t talked to him recently. I know his deal is up in August, and I know he wants to fight. Listen, when he’s ready to fight, he’ll give me a call. … I don’t know the dealings in the WWE, but as far as I know, his deal’s until August. But I don’t know for sure.”

And lastly White discussed a potential women’s superfight between featherweight champ Cris Cyborg and bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes.

“You know that’s the fight that I want, but [Nunes’] foot is broken right now. And apparently there’s some gas crisis going on in Brazil or something. She can’t get out of her hometown right now.”

“The s*** that goes on here, you can’t write it. [WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon] couldn’t come up with the s*** that happens here. There’s a gas crisis, and she can’t get out of her country? Are you f***ing kidding me right now? You couldn’t write this s***.”
