The top contenders are fighting for a shot at UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping.
#2 Chris Weidman fights #4 Yoel Romero at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. #3 Jacare Souza fights #1 Luke Rockhold at UFC Fight Night 101 on Nov. 26, 2016, in Melbourne, Australia.
Whoever wins most spectacularly will presumably get the shot; Romero take note. Bisping appeared recently on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour, and named who he hopes comes out on top.
“Obviously, it’s got to be one of the big contenders next,” said Bisping, as transcribed by Adam Guillen Jr for MMA Mania. “Let’s see how the chips fall, but I think I want Weidman to be honest. If he can get past Romero, that would be a fight that interests me. It seems that me and Weidman have this rivalry now. I’ve got nothing against Weidman, he likes to talk s*** about my career and I do the same on his. But, I wish him all the best.
“Competition aside, he seems like a good guy and a good dude. But, we’ve been talking a lot and we’ve got to settle it inside the Octagon. If he gets past Yoel Romero, which he’s got his hands full there. But if he does, I would happily fight him. I think it’s a good match up in late February or March, something like that.
“Business-wise, nobody really cares about Luke Rockhold, or Chris Weidman either. Neither of them will make me that much money. Unfortunately, they are the top two guys in the division other than me and nobody gives a s*** about them, nobody gives a damn. That’s why Chris Weidman couldn’t main event a pay-per-view, he was always the co-main event.
“But, I’ll take on the best challenger. I know what people said about the Henderson fight, but UFC came with me about the match, I didn’t ask for it but I said, ‘sure.’ So I’ll just take on the true No. 1 contender next.”
