Gina Carano was the face of women’s MMA, and one of the biggest names in the sport. Then she retired and has developed a successful career as an actress.
Ronda Rousey is the face of women’s MMA, and one of the biggest names in the sport. She recent suffered back to back losses and had already spoken about winding down her fighting career. Rousey has also begun a parallel career in movies.
Thus, Carano is ideally suited to offering Rousey advice, and did so during a recent interview with FightHub TV immediately after Tito Ortiz defeated Chael Sonnen in the main event of Bellator 170.
I think Ronda should do whatever she wants to do,” said Carano, as transcribed by Damon Martin for FOX Sports. “She’s only 29. She’s an amazing athlete but she needs to express herself as an artist, too.
So let her do what she wants to do and just follow along her journey and support her.
Fight life is hard but so is being on film. You’ve just got to do your passion and do what you’re passionate about.
Rousey’s movie career is already underway. In 2014 she appeared in The Expendables 3. In 2015 she appeared in Furious 7 and Entourage. However, things slowed since.
She has not devoted the time necessary to refine her acting skills, so as an actress, you can charitably say she has the best armbars in WMMA history. Her role in Mile 22 was reportedly reduced, and a planned lead in a remake of Road House has been pushed back. Other projects to which her name was attached have likewise generated little news lately.
The good news is Rousey lives modestly (no tigers at her home, or swimming pools in the shape of an MMA glove). She made enough money to do whatever she wants to.
