Chael vs. Wand to headline Bellator 180 PPV event
Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will fight in the main event of a Bellator MMA pay-per-view show on June 24 at Madison Square Garden. This is only the second PPV that Bellator has attempted and the first under president Scott Coker. The first one was in May of 2014.
“I’ve watched how hard Bellator has worked and how they’ve stuck through it, and I think they belong on pay-per-view. After I joined up, I was stunned that Bellator was packing houses from the East Coast to the West Coast. They’ve got a great product, and it just seemed like the next logical step was going into pay-per-view.”
“I’ll fight Wanderlei Silva the next time I see him. I fought Wanderlei Silva the last time I saw him. I’m glad it’s going to be an organized event. I’m glad it’s not going to be something outside of the ring.”
Sonnen and Silva have a long-simmering feud that started with this in 2011.
The UFC had the pair as opposing coaches on TUF Brazil 3 in 2013, but the bout fell apart when Silva refused to be PED tested, and was replaced with Vitor Belfort. Then Sonnen failed a PED test. Wand has not fought since March of 2013, and has alternated wins and losses since 2010. Sonnen is a similar 4-5 in the same time period.
The card will also reportedly have the best fighters in Bellator, which could even include Fedor Emelianenko.
“We always said that when we come to New York, we’ll bring the biggest and the best fight card we’ve ever had in the history of this company,” said Coker. “We’re putting it together, and our roster is robust enough that we feel like it’s time to get into the pay-per-view business, so here we go.”
