Coenen vs. Budd for inaugural Bellator featherweight belt

Monday, January 09, 2017

Dutch women’s featherweight Marloes Coenen was scheduled to fight Julia Budd for the league’s inaugural women’s featherweight championship at Bellator 155 on May 20, 2016. However, Budd withdrew from the fight with an injury, and was replaced by Alexis Dufresne.

Dufresne missed weight, so the bout was non-title at a catchweight of 150. In one of the biggest upsets of the year, Coenen lost via submission in the first round.

Coenen was scheduled to fight Talita Nogueira at Bellator 163 in November but the bout was canceled the day before when Nogueira failed to make weight.

Now MMA Fighting reports that Bellator is going to try the initial pairing again, for the still inaugural title. The fight will take place at Bellator 174 on March 3 in Thackerville, OK, at the WinStar World Casino and Resort.

Bud is on a seven-fight win streak. In fact, she has not lost since succumbing to a Ronda Rousey armbar at Strikeforce Challengers: Britt vs. Sayers back in 2011.

The new Bellator title is yet another sign of the vibrant growth of women’s mixed martial arts. It comes less than a month after the UFC crowns its first inaugural women’s featherweight champion, when Holly Holm fghts Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208.
