Conor agrees to give up one belt with UFC 205 win

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor famously entered the league vowing he wasn’t there to take part, he was there to take over. Actually taking over would mean equity, and that isn’t happening today. But in terms of media, Conor McGregor took over.

‘Notorious’ aims to break bones, hearts, and records. He wants to become the first champion to hold belts in two divisions simultaneously. BJ Penn and Randy Couture are the only fighters to hold belts in two divisions but neither did so at the same time.

In the main event of UFC 205, McGregor fights lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. UFC president Dana White says when he wins he has to give up one belt or the other. However, McGregor crowed that it would take an army to get the belt off of him.

McGregor spoke recently with Mike Dyce for SI and said he would give up one belt, under one condition.

“Let me see the pictures on publications with a belt on each shoulder first,” said McGregor. “Let me go onto the side of that Octagon and raise two world titles, what’s never been done before, before talking about stripping me. Let me get the f***ing things, let me do it.

“I’ll always listen to the correct business move and I’ll always do what is the correct move. But let me do it and let me go back and look at some pictures of me with two belts and let me embrace it for half-a-day.”

“It’s the media that’s making this. Let me look at the historic images we’re going to get on this night, me with these two belts. That’s what everyone should be excited about, this is history.”

The argument is that no one can defend two belts at the same time, but he argues that he is active enough to do both.

“Everyone wants to see you do good, but not better than them,” he said. “That’s what’s happening here. I’m just looking forward to raising the belts, and doing what has not been done before.

“Don’t be trying to take away the historic moment before I’ve even experienced it.”

The entire discussion is, of course, theoretical. If ‘Notorious’ loses, there will be no extra belt to give up.
