The UFC pound for pound best list is a hugely theoretical exercise:
1. Demetrious Johnson
2. Georges St-Pierre
3. Stipe Miocic
3. Conor McGregor
5. Daniel Cormier
6. Max Holloway
7. TJ Dillashaw
8. Tyron Woodley
9. Khabib Nurmagomedov
10. Cris Cyborg

#10 Cris Cyborg is never going to fight #9 Khabib Nurmagomedov. #1 Demetrious Johnson is never going to fight #3. Stipe Miocic. And Miocic and fellow #3 placeholder Conor McGregor aren’t fighting ever outside of the EA Sports UFC game.

However, there is an exception. At UFC 226, UFC heavyweight champion Stope Miocic (#3) fights light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (#5). In a recent interview with FloCombat, Cormier argued that #5 + #3 = #1, that the winner of the main event on July 7 is the #1 P4P fighter in MMA.

“That’s what it should be,” said Cormier. “Stipe and I are ranked like No. 3 and 4 or No. 4 and 5 in the pound-for-pound rankings right now. How much better does it get than that? This is as good as it gets in terms of sport, in terms of athletic competition, in terms of importance of the sport tied to one fight. It’s unbelievable. I’m so lucky to be a part of this.”

With a win, Cormier would be only the second fighter after Conor McGregor to hold belts in two divisions. And it would, at last, give Cormier something monster over his nemesis Jon Jones.

“This gives me exactly what I’ve been pining for,” said Cormier. “I get this done, everything I’ve always wanted, wished for and hoped for is not only a reality but it’s my truth now. I can honestly say I am one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time and have no reservations about it and no one can question it.”
