Father: Nurmagomedov will fight Alvarez if McGregor fights Ferguson
UFC president Dana White wants lightweight champ Conor McGregor to next fight interim lightweight champ Tony Ferguson. #1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov wants a title shot, but if the two title holders fight each other, his father and trainer Abdulmanap told the Russian language Match TV that the next best choice is Eddie Alvarez.
“I think that Conor, Diaz, and Ferguson, instead of fighting with Khabib, will be better off against each other 30 times,” said Abdulmanap, as translated for MMA Fighting‘s Jed Meshew “If Conor and Ferguson fight among themselves, give us Alvarez. He said that he was preparing Barboza for Khabib. Well, let’s see, let him go himself now.”
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan runs from May 15 to June 14 this year; adherents must fast during daylight hours. Abdulmanap explained that leaves Saturday, May 19 open for the fight, but not after.
“If in the first third of Ramadan, then this is normal: Khabib will not begin to weaken,” explained Abdulmanap. “In fact, eight days before the fight, when he makes weight, he already eats little and eats less than in Ramadan after sunset. Until May 22, we are ready to take the fight.”
Khabib has suffered weight cutting issues in the past, but said recently that with his new diet regimen, he could make featherweight. However, Abdulmanap said that division is off the table.
“We were never interested in fighters in that weight,” he said. “Neither Holloway nor Aldo. If people in the 70 kg division [155 pounds] cannot get out from under Khabib, do you think that someone in 66 kg can do it? Holloway is small.”
