Fedor: I fight for the glory of God
At the Bellator 172 open workout media scrum, Fedor Emelianenko fielded a number of questions, with insight and good humor. He was asked how he would compare PRIDE Fedor to Bellator Fedor. The Last Emperor raised his eyebrows, was silent for a time, replied, and eventually laughed.
“The only one thing I can say for sure [is] that I didn’t become younger,” he replied, via a translator, to general laughter.
Fedor was asked if he was familiar with the “Greatest of All Time” term, and how he felt about being on the G.O.A.T. list. There was another period of silence as the greatest heavyweight in mixed martial arts history gathered his thoughts.
“I fight to glorify the glory of God,” he replied. “And in order of God. “My personal popularity is pretty tiring for me.”
Fedor was asked why he fights on.
“I’m the representative of my country,” he replied. “What other motivations? A lot of young boys follow me. And they also want to glorify their motherland, and they want to achieve best result. And I hope you will be able to see them pretty soon.”
Fedor was asked if he planned to fight on in Bellator. The unspoken question is, could Saturday night be Fedor’s final fight? His reply was brief.
“God’s will,” he said. “We’ll see what God wants. … We propose and God disposes.”
Fedor was asked what advice he would have for a young fighter.
“Those people who want to become champions, their desire has to be supported by their very industrious work,” said Fedor. “And certainly, they have to consider themselves not to be higher or better than anybody else. Because later, it will be very difficult to fall. So you have to input all the energy and forces which we have to be able to achieve the result and the goal. And to treat people and to act as human beings. And the rest, that will depend on God, God’s will.”
Lastly, Fedor was asked about what fond memories he had of America, perhaps even a favorite food.
“The most memorable visits that I had were with my family,” he replied. “When Scott [Coker, Bellator president] invited us to come with the family. As for the food, we eat everything.”
Fedor Emelianenko fights Matt Mitrione in the main event of Bellator 172 on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
