Top UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson appeared recently in studio on the JRE MMA Show and discussed what’s next. He’s been out for a year following shoulder surgery. Prior to that, he won two in a row following a loss to Daniel Comier for the title. He’s won a performance of the night bonus in four of his last six fights. Gus needs and has earned something big, but DC has an upcoming fight vs. heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. And a rematch with Jon Jones is out, because Jon Jones. So it’s complex.

“There’s been some discussions, but nothing that really I count on,” said Gus, as transcribed by Steven Marrocco and Mike Bohn for MMAjunkie. “It’s just been up in the air and I’m just waiting for something on the table that makes sense. I’m ready to go, man.”

So who’s next?

“I wish I had an answer to that right now, but I really don’t,” said Gustafsson. “It just has to be a meaningful offer, it has to be something I feel, ‘This is right, this is what I want.’ I feel like in my position, in my career right now, every fight has to mean something.

“It could be something else too [besides rematches vs. Jones or Cormier], but it has to feel right. It has to be something meaningful. Something good. Everybody knows when I’m stepping up into that octagon I’m going to perform and I’m going to make a show. I’m looking for that gold. That’s all I’m seeing.”

“If [Jones] doesn’t come back, maybe I fight him in boxing. It’s bigger than winning the belt.”

“The only fight that makes sense for me right now is fighting top guys. I can’t look back. I can’t look down. I have to look up.”.

The question, of course, remains look up vs. who?
