Holloway: Why would McGregor return to UFC after MayGregor?

Sunday, June 18, 2017

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will box Floyd Mayweather on August 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. He will reportedly make well over $50,000,000.

There has been some speculation that McGregor, who was on welfare in 2013, might never fight again. During an appearance on Snoop Dogg’s GGN News, UFC president Dana White acknowledged that is a possibility.

“If this thing goes down, Conor could make anywhere from 60 to 70 million,” said White. “How do you come back again and fight for 8, 9, 10 million bucks?”

“He’s a smart kid, but he may never fight again. In the fight business, you gotta be hungry. You gotta be hungry. It’s hard to get up and get punched in the face every day when you’ve got $75 million in the bank.”

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, new UFC featherweight champion  Max Holloway expressed similar doubts.

“That guy gets to choose whoever he wants to fight,” said Holloway, as transcribed byMarc Raimondi for MMA Fighting. “This guy is not even talking about MMA, so I don’t even feel like we should even be talking about him. But at the end of the day, if you got paid $50 or $75 million would you come back to mixed martial arts after that? Exactly. It’s very tough. I have no idea why he would come back.”

Holloway is intent on creating a legacy of his own, and he would be happy for that to include a rematch with McGregor.

“If they want to fight, they can fight, but at the end of the day we got other guys that’s in here, that’s in MMA, that’s talking about MMA and they’re talking about wanting to fight me,” said Holloway. “We’re gonna figure stuff out and take it one step at a time.”

The first step Holloway wants to take is a renegotiated contract.

“[White and I] sat down,” said Holloway. “He told me, ‘This is big-game hunting, kid. This is big-game hunting. You bring in the big kills, you cash in the big pay checks.’ So he told me. So I was like, you know what? He’s listening. He’s probably watching the fight now. I don’t want to text him. I’ll just have a bunch of hundred media outlets texting him and everybody tweeting him.”

As of Monday, Holloway and White have not sat down since the Aldo defeat. Once that happens Holloway wants to fight in the Fall. With McGregor planning to fight in the Octagon in 2017, that schedule would work.
