Maia wins and gets title shot vs. Woodley

Saturday, May 13, 2017

Demian Maia had an interesting BJJ vs. striking fight with Jorge Masvidal on the main card of UFC 211 on Saturday night. ‘Gamebred’ easily won the striking exchanges for roughly half the fight. And for the other half Masvidal was positionally dominated, but was never close to tapping.

The judges split, with two favoring Maia.

UFC president Dana White appeared on the S1 prefight show and said that the winner would get a shot at UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. After winning the Split Decision, Maia walked over the White and made the case again, noting it was his 7th win in a row. Meanwhile, color commentator Joe Rogan had opined that Maia was not just the best BJJ-based fighter in the UFC, but was the best BJJ-based fighter in UFC history.

The accumulation of accolades is overwhelming, and White told Maia he would get the next title shot.

“Thanks God,” said Maia.

Later, Maia directed some words to Woodley.

In odd statistical occurrence, Masvidal falls to 4-4 his last eight fights, with all four losses coming via Split Decision.
