Massachusetts fighter dies following weekend bout
Plymouth (Massachusetts) County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced that an investigation is underway into the death of local amateur MMA fighter Rondel Clark. Clark, 26, had been a 1-0 amateur welterweight and faced then 0-2 amateur Ryan Dunn at Cage Titans 35, on Saturday, August 12, 2017. The event was held at Plymouth Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Clark lost by TKO in Round 3, when he appeared to be too fatigued to intelligently defend himself. The event can be viewed on FloCombat (subscription). Neither the matchmaking, the bout, nor the stoppage gave any indication what so ever that anything was amiss.
Clark reportedly had difficulty breathing and following a post-fight examination was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital (Plymouth). He was then transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital (Boston) where he passed away on Monday.
The cause of death has not been established, but the Office of the State Medical Examiner on working on a determination. The death of the Sutton, Mass. based fighter is under investigation by state police, local police and the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission.
Our heart goes out to Clark’s family, friends, and teammates.
