Mayweather: I carried McGregor to make it look good
Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor had some of the meanest pre-fight trash talk since Benny Paret called Emile Griffith a “maricon” and was beaten death. Afterward, however, each was so admirably respectful you’d think they just made each other fabulously richer.
Further, the bout was competitive at points, even exciting. There was a great deal of speculation that Mayweather might have carried McGregor, but ‘Money’ hadn’t said so, until now.
“I’m gonna tell y’all the truth, I’m gonna tell y’all the truth,” said Mayweather to Fight Hype. “You know I carried McGregor. You know I made it look good for y’all.”
The next question of course is is this the truth, or the beginning of trash talk leading to MayMac 2?
In September McGregor named eight possible fights: Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee, Nate Diaz, Paulie Malignaggi, Floyd Mayweather, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, and Georges St-Pierre. Lee and Gaethje are out due to losses. GSP’s star is rising with the win over Bisping. And other boxers have thrown their name out there, including Oscar De La Hoya, who bitterly criticized MayMac as a farce.
Mayweather responded to that, too.
“Is he a hypocrite, or is he back on coke again,” asked Mayweather. Best guess is hypocrite. And with Mayweather blocking other boxing matches, it’s a reasonable guess that with expenses reportedly as high as $75 million per year, Mayweather is looking for one last PPV, vs. Conor McGregor.
