The most frequently wasted moment in mixed martial arts is when Joe Rogan walks up to the fighter who just won. Fan excitement is at a feverish pitch.

Too frequently the fighter thanks his coaches, God, and family, sometimes in English, sometimes not. None of that makes money.

Instead, the smart fighters call out who they want to fight next. It does not always work, and the UFC does not generally make matches immediately post fight, but it is very much the smart thing to do.

CM Punk was still trying to remember his own name after UFC 203 on Saturday when Mickey Gall was calling out Sage Northcutt. Gall, after all, got into the UFC by winning in a regional show and then calling for a fight with CM Punk, with UFC president Dana White sitting in the audience.

Gall is a good fighter, who got into the UFC years before he otherwise might have. The highly mediagenic Northcutt has received attention and money in the league in excess of his present skill set, receiving for example twice the purse that former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw did at UFC 200. So it’s a smart fight, and Northcutt’s management knows it.

White spoke just after the fight with Megan Olivi and discussed the potential match up.

“I never make fights the night of the fight,” White had explained previously. “Mickey Gall will obviously move forward and continue to fight here in the UFC.”

Olivi also asked about a potential Gall vs. Northcutt fight.

“When he called him out, Sage’s people responded – texted me immediately,” said White. “And they want the fight. So we’ll see if that fight happens.”

Gall wants the fight. Northcutt wants the fight. It makes sense. So make it happen Dana White.
