Romero: Working with Jones showed me how to beat Whittaker
The UFC middleweight title has been through a blender. When Michael Bisping failed to defend his belt in a timely manner, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker fought for the interim belt, with the latter gritting out a narrow decision. Then Georges St-Pierre beat Bisping. Then GSP gave up the belt, and Whittaker’s interim belt was elevated to undisputed without a fight.
Romero appeared recently on The JRE MMA Show #17, and said he is again fighting Whittaker, at UFC 225. Romero was asked to predict how the fight will go.
“After the [Whittaker] fight, my manager said that when he saw me I had a big smile on my face. I was very happy. I didn’t take that loss as serious as I should have. [I was happy because] I learned. And now you see what happened with Luke Rockhold. I learned about timing.
“Listen, people talk about my ‘gas’ but it wasn’t easy to fight Luke Rockhold. I went to Albuquerque with Jon Jones and I learned something. They controlled my attacks, so I learned when to attack. If you go, go, go, you will get tired. So I had to learn to pace myself. I don’t have a problem with five rounds now.”
UFC 225 will be held on June 9, 2018, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
