What CSAC is doing to combat the culture of extreme weight cutting

Monday, April 23, 2018

In The Fight Game with Jim Lampley series, the voice of boxing on HBO steps away from the mic at ringside to delve more deeply into the sweet science. In the most recent episode, the four-time Sports Emmy Award winner, who began calling fights on HBO a generation ago, dives into the dangers associated with many boxers’ toughest fight: making weight, and what California State Athletic Commission executive director Foster is doing about it.

Although the focus here is on boxing, it applies equally to mixed martial arts.

The culture of extreme weight cutting is the most dangerous regulatory issue in mixed martial arts. Foster has created a 10 Point Plan to fix the deadly problem. It works. The ABC medical committee supports it. The ABC has adopted it. The UFC supports it and will continue to adopt further parts of it. It is now incumbent on the other commissions across North America to join Foster in combatting this deadly, correctable issue.
