White: I’m going to give CM Punk one more fight
UFC president Dana White spoke recently with the AP about some of the names in the sport that have blown up and into to the mainstream.
Former WWE champion CM Punk landed in the UFC on the basis of his professional wrestling skills, and as widely expected, that proved inadequate. Punk’s sole prior combat sports experience was a green belt in karate earned as a child; despite training with Duke Roufus one of the greatest coaches in MMA history, Punk managed to throw a single, hapless punch before being beaten into submission by Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on September 10, 2016.
However, Punk is game, and wants to fight again. White indicated he would accommodate.
“I like that guy. He’s a good dude,” said White. “He wants one more. He wants to get another shot. I’m going to give it to him. … He’s a completely different case than most normal human beings, so I’m going to give him another shot.”
No opponent was named although White said he’s working on it. The UFC boss also referenced other fight questions of the day.
Will Brock Lesnar return?
“I think he’ll give it one more run. I just think Brock loves to fight.”
Will Ronda Rousey return?
“She won’t fight again. I love that woman. We have an amazing relationship. What she’s done for the sport and for this company, created millions of female fans around the world. Ronda can do whatever the hell she wants to do.”
Will Conor McGregor return to the Octagon?
“I don’t know. I don’t wait for anybody. I run my business, I keep rolling and that’s it. The kid’s got $100 million. Who knows, he might never fight again.”
Will Conor McGregor box Floyd Mayweather again?
“I wouldn’t do that fight again. I would never work with Showtime again. I’d never work with that weasel [Showtime Sports general manager Stephen Espinoza] again.”
Will Floyd Mayweather enter the Octagon?
“I think that’s the only way people would care this time. Do you know how many people want to see that guy take a shin to the face?”
