White: Poirier ‘absolutely’ in the running for title shot
UFC president Dana White spoke with the press after what may be the fight of the year between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC on FOX 29 on Saturday.
White was asked if ‘The Diamond’ was a title contender after the stunning performance.
“Absolutely,” said White to Damon Martin for MMAWeekly. “He’s definitely in there. He’s one of the guys we were thinking about calling last week to take the fight [vs. Khabib] but I didn’t want to screw up this event and thank god I didn’t.”
“Obviously, tonight was a big night for him. Gaethje is very well respected in that division. Tough guy. Poirier ate, much like the Eddie Alvarez fight, tons of kicks. Could barely walk and pulled off the win.”
The current undisputed champion is Khabib Nurmagomedov. Former interim champ Tony Ferguson is still recovering from the freak injury that took him out of UFC 223. Featherweight champ Max Holloway stepped up but was unable to safely make weight, something he clearly could do 155 given sufficient time, as he has to make 145 to defend his belt. The fight Nurmagomedov and everyone else wants is Conor McGregor, but his wheels came off. So Poirier could get the opportunity.
