Harris was born in Belleville, Illinois in 1970, and graduated from Belleville Township High School-East in 1988. He is a graduate of California State University, with a Masters degree in Organizational Behavior and Management. Captain Harris is also a graduate of the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the Amphibious Warfare School, the SERE Desert Survival Program, and the Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) program. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended Recruit Training and the School Of Infantry in California in 1988. He spent the next twelve years as an Enlisted Marine, and rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (E-7), with three meritorious promotions along the way. Some of the career highlights/major organizations served during his Enlisted time are: Drill Instructor, Operations Chief, Logistics Chief, Logistics Operations Analyst; and serving with Marine Division, Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Expeditionary Unit, Marine Logistics Group, and Liaison/Instructor, FISC San Diego. In 2001, Harris was selected for the Marine Corps Warrant Officer Program, and attended The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia. He then had several CONUS tours and deployments abroad; most notably with MEF Headquarters Group, 2nd Marine Division, Multi-National Force West, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group; including service with U.S. Coalition Forces, Joint Forces Command components, and a tour as a Company Commander. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer-3 in 2006. After returning from his third tour in Iraq, and just after reaching 20 years of service, he was transferred to Marine Barracks Washington, D. C., also known as “8th & I”. While at Marine Barracks, he was promoted to Captain. Captain Harris began his Martial Arts and Hand-To-Hand Combat training when he joined the Marine Corps, and transitioned into the Marine Corps Martial Arts Training Disciplines as the system evolved since the mid 1990's. He is a 1st Degree Black Belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) combat fighting system, and is an active fighter/competitor of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Cage Fighting. He incorporates disciplines in Jiu-Jitsu, Kenpo, Judo, and a Hybrid MCMAP Freestyle. Captain Harris is also a Triathlete, and has competed in 15 triathlons across the United States. In 1999, he helped organize and participated in a 700 mile bike ride to benefit the Toys For Tots Foundation, raising over $15,000 in eight days. He is also an avid distance runner, and has competed in 3 Marathons, 1 Iron Man, and 1 Ultra-Marathon Road Race (50+ miles). Captain Shawn Harris currently serves as a Joint Distribution Logistics Officer for the Defense Distribution Center’s Office of Strategic Planning Directorate within the Defense Logistics Agency. He is also an instrumental figure involved in public outreach programs for the community, and is on the Board Of Directors for the Tri-County Association for the Blind (TCAB) of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and has worked for several years in helping the organization of Battered Women’s Shelters. Captain Harris has served at each level of the Marine Corps’ Organizational and Operational Elements, on Joint Staff, and has participated in eight major deployments over his career. Some of his personal military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He lives, serves, and trains in Central Pennsylvania.
