I'm not a big fan of Bendis' Reality Show for superheroes writing style on the Avengers books.  I feel most of the characters sound nothing like themselves and do retarded things most of the time, but occasionally, he nails it.

NEW AVENGERS #7 is one of those times.  The reason it works is because there's no action in this issue.  Bendis just sucks at writing action and his dialogue during fights is ludicrous.  This is a quieter issue where the Avengers are just recovering from fighting the latest big bad (Agommotto of eye fame) and take time to regroup and chart their course.

There's a couple memorable scenes such an allusion to a past romantic entanglement between Luke Cage and the 65 year old chick who works with Damage Control, an interviewing session with various heroes to become the Avengers nanny (including poor pathetic D-Man), a Squirrel Girl appearance, the return of Wong and Dr. Strange officially signing on as a team member.

In sum, this issue is Bendis doing what he does best:  Create opportunities for zingers between super-heroes and shedding subtle light on characters through their interactions with one another.  While I never thought I'd buy into Spider-Man's inclusion on the team, I have to admit no one gets Peter Parker like Bendis.  He writes him the same whether it's the Ultimate U or the 616 U.  He is annoying on the team, but it totally fits how Peter would function on a team.  At the same time, he totally doesn't get Wolverine and his inclusion strains credulity (and continuity) considering the dozens of other teams he's on and current status of being in Hell.  He also just sounds stupid.

In all, good jumping on point and good read.  Check it out GeekS!

*Bows back* Ha ha thanks for posting that.

Knee I agree with you to a point, I dont think Bendis writes the best Spiderman ever though. I love Ultimate Spiderman and he does nail Spidey a lot of the time BUT sometimes he tries too hard to make him a Jewish Bugs Bunny and repeats the same catchphrases that arent really Parker's.

He's also not as funny as he could be. Spidey to me is the most annoying character to fight if you're a supervillian because he just wont quit talking and hitting you and when you can't do dialogue that well in a fight scene context you sort of lose a big element that is Spiderman's persona.

Like I said though I think his Ultimate Spiderman is worth pact keepers reading.

Spiderman is the John "J.D." Dorian of the Marvel Universe.

Thanks for this.  "Downtime" issues are some of my favorite comics to read.
