BigWilliam - There are people with better credentials than Cormier. Forum favorite ben asrken for one and Kamal Shalarous for another.

I hope your joking neither kamal or askren have credentials near cormier, kamal isn't even a decent international wrestler.
In all fairness Askren did better collegiately, while Cormier was better on the world level. Collegiate style translates a bit better into MMA imo.

However, I'm arguing that Cormier has the widest array of skills in MMA. He can do it all, and makes it look effortlessly. He was snapping Barnett down and moving him like a ragdoll.

One fight out of a plethora of highly skilled wrestling displays does not constitute the title of best wrestler in mma. Phone Post

Credit to Cormier for not getting put in the spot yet, but we don't know how his 'desperation' wrestling will look.

His chin looked solid vs Barnett, but if he fights at HW, he's going to get rocked at some point. I'm not an Askren fan, but Askren has been able to clinch when he's been in trouble.

I'm guessing that any opponent Cormier gets is going to practice jabbing him and keeping distance. TDD is huge, but fighters like JDS are pretty good about controlling distance as well. Cormier may still be able to hit he TD, but it's going to be intrinsically harder than scooping up Barnett after a failed TD...

I don't think stats tell you the whole story, though. Although GSP may have the most effective double leg, he's far and wide not the best all-around wrestler in MMA.

Top 10 takedown fighters

The title for the most successful takedown artist goes to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Russian Lightweight UFC fighter. With 36 takedowns in the space of four fights, the 25 year-old picked up 10 more takedowns than Brett “Fudoshin” Cooper and 13 more takedowns than “ill” Will Brooks, despite having a fight less than either fighter.

Khabib expertly combined trips, double legs and suplexes on his way to victory over Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, Abel Trujillo and Pat “Bam Bam” Healy. Despite the variety of attacks, Khabib did show a slight preference for the suplex, particularly to his left hand side.

In terms of total takedowns, the Top 10 takedown fighters were:

  1. Khabib Nurmagomedov
  2. Brett Cooper
  3. Will Brooks
  4. Nik Lentz
  5. Dennis Bermudez
  6. Demetrious Johnson
  7. Joe Warren
  8. Georges St Pierre
  9. Johny Hendricks
  10. Daniel Cormier

Takedown Rate

However, the overall number of takedowns is scewed by the fact that different fighters have had different numbers of fights. To adjust for this we divided a fighter’s total number of takedowns by the number of fights each fighter had. This produces a takedown rate per fight.

The impact on the top 10 takedown fighters is dramatic. Although Khabib Nurmagomedov remains at the top of the tree, assessing by takedown rate results in the top 5 takedown fighters becoming dominated by UFC fighters. Bellator fighters Brett Cooper and Will Brooks drop to 6th and 7th place, respectively, due to the fact that they had more fights (5 fights) than the UFC fighters.

By contrast, Georges St Pierre moves up from 8th to 3rd place behind Nik Lentz, reflecting his high rate of takedown per fight. Dennis Bermudez and Demetrious Johnson also move up to 4th and 5th place, respectively, with four analyzed fights each. The results reflect the fact that the UFC generally has a higher takedown rate per fight than other organizations.

Most Takedowns in a Fight

As well as the most overall takedowns, the prize for the most takedowns in a single fight also goes to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib picked up a massive 29 takedowns in earning a unanimous decision over Abel Trujillo in May, 2013. The three round lightweight fight was a master class in Greco-Roman wrestling with Khabib dominating with predominately clinch-based takedowns. He used bodylocks and suplexes, combined with freestyle trips, to dominate his opponent on his way to the “W”.

The second most takedowns per fight was Nik Lentz’s victory over Diego Nunes. Lentz picked up 15 successful takedowns on his way to earning a unanimous decision over the Brazilian. Much like Khabib, Lentz used few double legs but instead relied on bodylocks, trips and suplexes to get the job done.

Khabib's stats are inflated. He took down Trujillo 20 times, but that was because he couldn't keep him down. Same w/ RDA. Cormier could have done the same thing to Hendo, but all he needed was a takedown a round and then he was able to keep Hendo down.

I think some people don't know the difference between "best wrestler in MMA" versus "best wrestling in MMA."

Yeah, GSP has lower stats because when he gets his takedown at the beginning of the round, that's it. The other guy is not getting back up.

So a guy might have way more takedowns GSP because 1) he just spams takedowns because he has no other weapons, and 2) his opponent keeps getting back up. Guys like Khabib fail on takedowns way more often than GSP does *and* they can't keep their opponents down, so I don't see how they can possibly be described as better wrestlers in MMA.

Leck Brosnar - If we're talking about effective wrestling in MMA, it's either GSP or Jones. Askren is great and all, but he hasn't faced the competition that GSP and Jones have.

Yeah, let's go with Jonny boy
